Neil MacCormick was the first son of Malcolm MacCormick b.1805, and Janet Campbell.

When Neil got married in 1859 he was a Police Officer and living in Glasgow.

In 1863 he emigrated to New Zeland with his family. At that time he was listed as a Farm Labourer.

Two of his brothers, Archibald and Lachlan, had already emigrated to New Zeland in 1861.
